Description

We provide a nursery for children aged 3-4 which is set in a single story building with easy access but the children also make use of other facilities around the school (for example, the school swimming pool, school hall etc.). We have 2 Reception classes which are also at ground floor level.

Transition into Nursery is carefully managed through a gradual introduction. Initial contact with parents involves a tour of the setting and a meeting with key personnel. Staff spend time with children to gain an idea of their needs and to ensure that the school feels able to meet those needs. Parents and children are then invited in again as part of their induction. During the first weeks of the new school year, time is given over to settling both children and parents into the routines of the school. Transition from Nursery to Reception Is also carefully managed, beginning, for example, with attendance at school assemblies and involvement in other whole school occasions

Both Nursery and Reception work within the EYFS framework but activities and provision are adapted to suit the needs of individual children. Our experienced team of staff ensures that the needs of each child are met.

Children’s progress is monitored carefully with regular observations of the children which provide information to include in each child’s learning journey. Information is regularly shared with parents, both informally and at formal consultations, held towards the start of the year and again midway through. A full written report is also provided during the year. We maintain regular contact with parents and they are always welcome to come and speak with staff. Senior staff are also available to discuss a child’s progress and offer pastoral support. Staff also aim to help parents to support their children’s learning at home, both through the provision of information and through meetings and consultations. Further advice is available from staff if required.

There is a Foundation Stage co-ordinator to oversee EYFS, supported by a Nursery Manager. Each Reception class is the responsibility of a qualified teacher, assisted by a teaching assistant and a number of other qualified staff (e.g. dance, swimming). All Nursery staff are qualified and there is also support from a qualified teacher.

The class teachers and the Nursery manager will plan work for each child in their care.

The school has a Learning Support department and the Learning Support co-ordinator oversees any extra provision for children across the school and is available to support EYFS staff as required. All children are included in all parts of the school curriculum. A risk assessment is carried out prior to any off-site activity to ensure everyone’s health & safety will not be compromised. In the unlikely event that it is considered unsafe for a child to take part in an activity, then alternative activities which will cover the same curriculum areas will be provided in school.

Needs are identified in a variety of ways, including:

• Observation of children’s performance and progress in relation to expected levels for their age

• Concerns raised by parent

• Concerns raised by teacher, for example behaviour or self-esteem is affecting performance

• Liaison with external agencies (e.g. physical need)

• Health diagnosis e.g. through paediatrician, vision screening from Stepping Hill, height, weight, hearing, sight tests carried out by the school nurse

• Liaison with previous setting

As a school, we seek to work closely with any external agencies that we feel are relevant to individual children’s needs within our school including, including GPs, school nurse, clinical psychologist, paediatricians, speech & language therapists and social services.

Teachers and TAs have regular training to update their knowledge on different spectrums and conditions. The School also keeps up to date with all current SEND legislation.

A number of staff have received training in Paediatric First Aid and staff have also attended training for Makaton/ speech therapy support. All staff are supported by the School Nurse, who takes overall responsibility for any medical conditions and has delivered training to staff on individual children’s needs (including epilepsy and diabetes).

EYFS buildings are mainly situated on one floor and most areas can be fully accessed by wheelchairs, as can the dining hall. We also have a disabled toilet.
