Description

How we support transitions

Each child will respond differently to a new environment. On securing a place with us we will designate a key person to your child who will discuss individual needs and routines with you and guide you through the settling in period. Parents are encouraged to spend time in the nursery to enable us to get to know one another and assist their child to explore their new environment and form a secure attachment with their key person.  Very soon your child will make new friends, get to know the routine and settle in. We recommend up to 5 settling in visits, beginning with a short visit with you staying with your child, building up to you leaving for longer periods of time as your child becomes familiar with their key person and environment. This period does allow for a great deal of flexibility and will vary from child to child. We will discuss these visits with you to ensure your child settles in as smoothly as possible.

To support transitions onto school we have established strong links with many schools within the borough who we invite into our setting to meet children in their familiar environment. Each child’s needs are individually addressed to ensure a move to their school runs smoothly.

Children’s development

Your child will have their own development record. A variety of information will be collected to assess your child’s development.  This may include information you share with us such as newly acquired skills discovered at home, such as new words and phrases and observations of your child  by your child’s key person during routine and one to one activities. All this information will enable us to plan further activities and experiences to meet your child’s individual needs ensuring they continue to make the best possible progress and follow their individual interests. We will share your child's progress with you through our parent app and parents meetings and your child's key person will work with you to make the most of their time at nursery.

At around age 2 years all children will have a progress check which will review their progress and provide parents/carers with a short written summary of your child’s development in the prime areas below which parents can share at their appointment. If the summary highlights any areas of concern this will be discussed in detail with you and a plan agreed with you to best support your child’s learning and development.

Your child’s records will be shared with you on a regular basis through the individual parents meetings we hold. Little Green Day Nursery is committed to the principles of The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which identifies the following early learning goals:-

The prime areas:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

 The specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

We actively liaise with external agencies with parental support to fully meet the needs of each child and welcome additional staff training and visits to the setting by any professional supporting children who attend. We have experience working with Portage, Speech and Language therapists, educational psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, sensory support service, health visitors, health trainers (epi-pen, diabetes and asthma) and family support workers.

If an individual learning plan is be required to meet medical and/or learning needs we have staff experienced in formatting these or incorporating existing plans. We can also accommodate one to one support for children with an education health and care plan (EHCP) or allocated funding.

We have a designated Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) who works alongside the key person of each child with identified needs.

Accessibility

Little Green Day Nursery is a single level building with excellent accessibility to the building, toilet areas and the gardens. We have parking on site. Our rooms are designed to create flexible spaces and allow for adjustments to meet children’s needs e.g. accommodating wheelchairs/walking frames, height adjustment of furniture.

We are proud to hold the Leading Parent Partnership Award which is a quality assurance mark reflecting the commitment we have to collaborative working with our parents.

Communication

We have a strong commitment to two way communication at Little Green Day Nursery. This ensures that we are able to offer your child continuity of care.Staff will hand over to individual parents/carers at the end of each child's day with information about their activities, general well-being and any other messages. We offer online learning journeys which parents can access and add to. We encourage parents to share photographs, video and add their comments which your child's key person will use to build up an accurate picture of developmental progress We keep parents up to date with nursery events and send out nursery invoices, information and newsletters by email. Information you add can be utilised by your child’s key person to build on their recent experiences and interests.

Our pre-school children have their own dedicated unit and outdoor classroom where their preparation for school takes place. Children are encouraged to use the library book system, participate in home learning activities and work on the letters and sounds and funky fingers activities.

On arrival each day we will ask for some information from you about your child  – health, appetite, sleep, nappy changes and any other information which will assist us to offer your child responsive care.

A parent’s notice board can be found at nursery and newsletters are also a regular feature to keep you updated with nursery news.

We have an “open door” policy for our parents therefore, which means no appointment is necessary – you are welcome at any time. Sometimes it may be necessary to arrange an appointment (for example, if you wish to discuss your child with their key person at length) as staff cover may need to be arranged. However, we will endeavour to do this at your convenience.

Your child’s key person will complete regular developmental assessments which will be shared and discussed with you. We will always welcome any additional information you may wish to share with us about your child and if you forget anything we are only a phone call away.

We are delighted to have gained an accredited award which reflects our commitment to partnership with our parents. We were the third private nursery in the country to achieve The Leading Parent Partnership Award which we renewed in 2016

To support the work with our parents we hold a parent voice meeting and events throughout the year. These are opportunities for parents and carers to contribute to and gain information how the nursery runs and promote positive outcomes for our children, parents, carers and staff.

Home learning and nursery events

Throughout the year we will hold events such as stay and play sessions and fun days which we encourage you and your family to attend. This is a perfect opportunity for you to get involved in the nursery and meet other parents as well as joining in with the fun!

We have a wide variety of home learning opportunities including taking home literacy, maths, story and singing bags as well as activity packs such as gloop and play dough samples with recipes to try at home. We also have  travelling bears who likes to spend the weekend with you!

The next steps sheets shared with you termly reflect the focused areas of development we will be working on and also suggests ideas for you to do at home.

All feedback we receive about your child’s enjoyment of home activities be it a resource taken home from nursery or information about your child’s current interest or home event is fully utilised to inform individual planning for your child by their key person therefore, we love to hear any news you wish to share!
