Hollins Wood Childcare

We are a large family run Daycare Nursery, situated near Marple Bridge, for children aged 3 months - 5 years.

The nursery is lucky to have 7 rooms for the children, all with their own outdoor area and a gym space for physical development. The large astroturf enables the children to spend time outside in all weathers.

The children have many opportunities to experience a variety of group activities, run by outside companies, with fully qualified staff, sessions such as dance, drama, sports, music and Makaton. All these activities add to their overall development. We are also very lucky that the nursery manager runs our very own weekly Forest School sessions at the local outdoor centre.

The nursery also operates a Before and After School Club for Ludworth, Mellor, and St Mary's Primary schools. The nursery mini bus will pick up and drop off your child.

Description

Hollins Wood Childcare believes that all children have a right to access a high level of care and education, in order to reach their individual potentials. For any child that may have an additional need we will always to do our best in order to support them and their families in reaching this. If you would like any more information then please contact the nursery on 0161 449 8800 and ask to speak to The Nursery Manager or SENCO

The setting has a lead SENCO who oversees all SEN cases and supports each room leader and the child’s key person in providing appropriate opportunities and care for each child.

Our pre-school room also has a qualified early years teacher and early years professional who have a lot of SEN experience and knowledge

In order to identify a child’s additional needs the key person would first come to the lead SENCO and together they would observe and assess the child to attain the child’s current level of achievement and what their extra needs may be. At this point we would begin to work alongside the child’s family and begin to put strategies in place

When working with children and families with SEN, we ensure the families are kept informed about all information and updates regarding their child as soon as possible. We would never make a decision for them, but give them the information and guidance to help them achieve one together. Whenever decisions are made regarding a child with an SEN the child is always at the centre of it

When a child is ready to make a transition and move to the next room in the setting we use a phased process. Each child and their family will be shown around the room and introduced to the child’s new key person, any information regarding the SEN will be handed over. If necessary we will arrange a more formal handover, to ensure that all information has been passed on to the relevant people. Before the child starts in their new room properly we will arrange a series of visits in order for them to get to know their new environment and begin to get to know the new key person. When a child leaves our setting to either go to school or a new nursery setting, we would look at each child’s needs individually and assess the transition process that will be most beneficial. This may be in the form of the child and their key person going to visit the new setting or the teacher coming to visit us. Again we will ensure that all relevant information has been passed on to the next setting to support in the transition

All staff at the setting are encouraged to attending a variety of training courses for their own continuous professional development. Our lead SENCO has attended the 10 week SENCO training course and regularly attends the SENCO network meetings. The lead SENCO also continues to update her continuous professional development and has attended a varied amount of courses with regard to Downs Syndrome, Autism, Behaviour Management, Introduction to Makaton and Social and Communication Difficulties. If situations arise where staff may need extra training in a specific area then we would do our best to find an appropriate course to meet this or seek help from an outside agency. Each room leader is given regular information from the lead SENCO, which enables them to support the other staff in their room, should a parent have a concern

When consulting with parents we would ensure that there are regular meetings between the relevant people and outside agencies (if applicable), in order for families to be part of the decision making processes and for them to be given updates about their child’s development. Verbal feedback is given to parent’s everyday throughout the nursery with regard to what their child has been doing that day in relation to the Early Years Foundation Stage. The setting also operates an open door policy so parents can speak to staff at different times of the day if they have any queries, Hollins Wood is also very proud to have achieved the Lead Parent Partnership Award

In order to support families with their child’s development, each child has a learning journey book that goes home each month and staff complete next steps in learning for each child for their families to carry out at home. The books show each child’s current interests and observes/assesses/plans for what each child’s development needs. All staff are aware of how to include children’s interests in to the activities they plan and understand how and why this is beneficial for a child’s development

Hollins Wood has worked alongside a variety of children and families with additional needs, they have ranged from Downs Syndrome, Visual impairments, Autism, Behavioural problems, Speech and language delays and global delays, each case has been very individual and we have always ensured to do what was best by each child/family and meet their ever changing needs where possible. As a result of this the setting is confident in accessing services and carrying out relevant procedures and paperwork that may be needed. Some of the agencies we have worked with are Portage, Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy, Educational Psychology and Sensory Support. If a child did need access and support from any outside service then we would feedback to families after any sessions that may take place within the setting. We would encourage parents to do the same with us and feedback any updates that they may receive in order for us to working jointly for the child

Whenever possible Hollins Wood Childcare will make adjustments to meet the needs of a child with SEN. This may come in the form of securing funding to allow 1:1 care to meet their needs or purchasing resources to help with adapting their learning and development. The layout of the setting overall is very accessible, it is over one floor, has very few steps and has alternative access points if the main entrance is not suitable. The pre-school room also has a separate accessible toilet.
