Description

Every Child Matters

We discuss a child’s individual needs so that any adjustments to our daily routine that is needed for the individual child’s needs will be accommodated to the best of our ability.

Within the first or second week of the child starting the parent and the key worker hold an initial discussion, this is so the parent can share information with the child's key worker.  The key worker can then assess where the child is up to within their learning.

When the child moves between rooms, the child's key worker will go for a few visits with them so they have a familiar figure around them, until they feel secure in the room. The key worker will discuss the child's interests and personality. The visits will extend for longer periods and more frequently till the child fully moves up. Parents are given the opportunity to visit the child’s new room and meet the practitioners. The child’s learning journey and other relevant information is passed on. From this the practitioners will be able to see where the child's development is up to and begin planning for their needs and interests.

Key worker and to look at the Learning Journey:

At the beginning of the transition to school we send a letter home to each individual child to see which relevant school they will be attending. We then contact the school and invite them in to visit the child. If the reception teacher chooses to visit the child within the setting there key worker will show them examples of that child's work and answer any questions the teacher may have. We offer parents time to come in to nursery to view their child's Learning Journey and discuss their transition to school. We encourage parents to leave any feedback about their child's time at the setting. We attend transition meetings and share the Learning Journey with the child's new reception teacher.

The needs of children are identified through observations and record keeping, through sharing information with parents and progress summaries. Children are assessed using a staged approach following the EYFS this is what is documented on the progress summary.

A CAF is completed if there is additional support which would benefit the child/family working with other agencies. This would be completed with parent(s). We also complete 2 year checks between the age of 2 and 3 years old.

Our staff are trained and supported to gain a variety of skills, when needed to support children’s additional needs. Staff have training in Basic Makaton, Behaviour Management and The Role of the SENCO. Any training is cascaded to other staff. If staff are interested on going on particular training we will try and accommodate this as well.

We have worked with a range of multi agencies such as Portage, Occupational Therapists, SALT and Educational Psychologists. When children are transferring from our setting, we liaise with colleagues from the receiving settings to exchange information to ensure a smooth transition and provide continuity of care for the child.

Our aim is to work in close partnership with the parent(s)/guardians, working hand in hand enable us to provide a unique childcare facility that is consistent and reflects the routine that is in place at home. We know that the closer our nursery team work with parent(s)/guardians the more rewarding and enjoyable their child’s time in nursery will be.

Our low staff turnover created by our team enables us to implement the key worker system effectively. Whilst Parent(s)/guardians are secure in knowledge that their child enjoys a complete “continuity of care”.

The person you leave your child with in the morning will pass on any messages and we also use a communication diary for all staff to read when they begin their day. This facilitates a constant dialogue between all concerned, so the simplest of matters can be regularly discussed and quickly resolved.

We welcome all your feedback, verbally, in writing or via a scheduled meeting. We believe that consistency and continuity work hand in hand, providing the sound foundation which we build from.

At the beginning of each day staff greet parents/carers and will find out any information needed for that day and at the end of the day staff will inform parents/carers of their child’s day at nursery we send home their Communication Diary which states, what they have eaten, nappy/toileting routines and the activities they have enjoyed doing and any other information.

The Diaries are a two way communication between you and us. You can take them home to share them with family and to comment etc. Then bring them back to nursery with your child the next time they are in nursery

We have provided a range of ideas through verbal chats, which parents can do at home to support their child. On the termly reports it will state where the child is developmentally and also what they could do as “next steps” in their learning.

We will duplicate resources used at nursery for use at home as well for example now and next boards. We have also sent home story sacks for the parents/ carers to share with their children.

We offer support with regards to sharing knowledge and information or signpost them to independent advice and guidance where necessary.
