- Description
I have previously worked with a child who had Down Syndrome in a Nursery school. Within that time I practised Makaton Sign Language, to aid the child’s language skills and also integrated it to all the other children in the class. This is a skill I still use today to communicate to all the children in my care. To support this child’s needs I worked in partnership with the child’s Carer, Portage and also a Speech and Language specialist from Stepping Hill hospital.
I work with parents/carers to support children through transition periods and try to make it as easy as possible. I like to organise settling in sessions for the parents/carers and their child. This gives parents/carers the opportunity to provide me with lots of information about their child, their likes and dislikes, routines, favourite activities, how to comfort them if they become upset. It also gives me the opportunity to start to build a relationship with parents/carers and their child and to understand both their needs and wishes. I am happy for parents/carers to stay until they feel that their child has settled. Some children do take longer than others to settle and some settle quickly.
I am aware that some children may have learning difficulties and disabilities. I am proactive in ensuring that appropriate action is taken when a child is identified as having special needs or starts in my care. I keep observational notes and share these with the child's parents/carers. I discuss what support is available and work in partnership with parents/carers to discuss any agencies that are involved in the child's support and care. If I care for a child with special needs I include them by valuing and acknowledging children’s individuality and help them to feel good about themselves.
I seek information from parents about the child's routines, likes and dislikes. Adapting activities to enable children with special needs to take part. Arrange access to specialist equipment if needed. Discuss any equipment that the child may need. Consider any risk factors. Encourage children’s confidence and independence.
I will make reasonable adjustments towards my setting to be able to meet individual needs of all the children I care for. If I care for a child with special needs, I will include them by valuing and acknowledging children’s individuality and help them to feel good about themselves. I will discuss with parents/carers any equipment that a child may need, plus I aim to adapt activities to enable children with special needs to take part. If required and where possible I will arrange access to specialist equipment, consider any risk factors and discuss any equipment that a child may need.
