- Description
Ladybird Childcare has regard to the statutory guidance set out in the Special Educational Needs code of practice (DfE 2001) to identify, assess and make provision for children’s special educational needs. The Code of Practice recommends that Ladybird Childcare should adopt a graduated approach to assessment through Early Years Action and Early Years Action plus. Good practice of working together with parents, and the observation and monitoring of children’s individual progress, will help identify any child with special educational needs. Our nursery has identified a member of staff as a SENCO who will work alongside parents to assess the child’s strengths and plan for future support. The SENCO will ensure that appropriate records are kept according to the Code of Practice.
Ladybird Childcare is committed to the inclusion of all children. All practitioners are encouraged to attend local SENCO networks and any member of the team who wishes to extend their knowledge in any particular area of SEN is encouraged and supported by the management team to do so.
At Ladybird Childcare we believe that all children have the right to be cared for and educated to develop to their full potential alongside each other through positive experiences, to enable them to share opportunities and experiences and develop and learn from each other. At Ladybird Childcare we provide a positive and welcoming environment for both parents/carers. Every child and their family are supported according to their individual needs.
Ladybird Childcare is committed to working alongside parents in the provision as we believe that parents know their child best and can support us in ensuring that their child’s individual needs are met thus their child being able to develop to their full potential. Every child will be given a full settling in period when joining the nursery according to their individual needs. Ladybird Childcare will do a home visit if both the parent and the setting feel this will benefit the individual need of the child.
Through daily observations and the expertise of qualified practitioners a child may be identified as having additional needs that have previously been unacknowledged; Ladybird Childcare will work closely with the child’s parents and any relevant professionals, to establish if any additional action is required.
If additional services are required Ladybird Childcare will liaise with the relevant professionals and agencies such as, Early Year’s Advisor, Portage, Speech and Language, Educational Psychologist, Early Year’s Inclusion Team and the Child Development Unit.
Ladybird childcare is committed to working with any child who has a specific need and/or disability such as physical impairment, visual impairment, hearing impairment, mental health conditions, learning difficulties, communication impairment and autism. Ladybird Childcare is committed to making reasonable adjustments to enable every child to make full use of the nursery’s facilities.
Ladybird Childcare has named practitioners, which take on the role of the SENCO. Parents can request to speak with the SENCO before accepting a place within the setting. The SENCO will work alongside the child’s key-person taking the lead in further assessment of the child’s particular strengths and weaknesses; in planning future support for the child in discussion with colleagues; and in monitoring and subsequently reviewing the action taken and will ensure that appropriate records are kept up to date at all times.
Parents/carers will be encouraged to support their child’s learning and development at home. Ladybird Childcare will invite parents into the setting to observe how their child is making progress and with the support of the SENCO advice and aids will be given to support and aid their learning and development within the home.
