Description

At Bee Happy, we provide quality childcare which meets the individual needs of all our children.  We cater for children aged 0-5 years and have recently been graded Good by Ofsted (August 2014).

The nursery setting is a detached, ground floor, building providing easy access for parents/carers and their children.  Our facilities include disabled access to the building and a outdoor play area together with disabled toilet facilities.

The nursery upholds a strong and in-depth Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Policy to ensure that specific needs of individual children are met on a daily basis. This policy is implemented by the nursery’s Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-Ordinator (SENCo), Sarah Beeley who is supported by a knowledgeable team of nursery practitioners.

This policy is reviewed and updated on a regular basis and any updates are shared with our nursery practitioners at team meetings. The policy incorporates the SEND Code of Practice 2014, the Equality Act 2010 and the Children and Families Act 2014.   At Little Treasures we promote equality and diversity to ensure all our children are provided with the same opportunities throughout our nursery.

Bee Happy promotes positive partnerships with parents and we believe that effective communication is paramount to this. We have an open door policy where parents/carers can visit our nursery at any point during the day to have a look around.  Once registered at Bee Happy, children receive a number of free settling in sessions, usually three, which will be arranged at a mutually convenient time prior to a child’s start date.  Parents/carers are given the opportunity to stay with their child during these visits in order to become familiar with the nursery practitioners and our nursery environment.

We provide parents with a ‘Guide to the Early Years Foundation Stage’ to aid parents/carers’ understanding of the statutory guidelines and framework which the nursery follows.

On settling in a child, parents are also asked to complete a small amount of paperwork to assist our practitioners in gaining an understanding not only about a child’s routine but also their current stage of development.  This allows us to provide activities for children which are stimulating, interesting and challenging.  The nursery operates a key person system where children are allocated a specific practitioner to ensure their nursery experience is secure, positive and challenging whereby learning and development is promoted through a thorough understanding of each and every child within our care.

Practitioners work closely with children to ensure positive and secure attachments, thus providing optimum opportunity for children to grow in a happy environment.  A key person spends time with a child, observing and carrying out activities to suit individual needs.  This allows us to plan effective activities to support development. Overall development is tracked every 3-4 months and a small report is compiled for parents, where practitioners summarise a child’s progress whilst, identifying any potential delays in development. If this occurs, the nursery’s SENCo will discuss the matter with a child’s parents/carers as soon as possible. There is a private office where discussions can take place and information can be shared in confidence.

Sarah (SENCo) has worked with and supported children with additional needs for 5 years and has experience working in conjunction with 3 separate council boroughs. Sarah has attended a range of training courses to help her in her role and has worked with an array of professionals.  Sarah strives to ensure her knowledge and training is up-to-date and uses this to implement effective SEND policies and procedures at Bee Happy.

Sarah’s role at Bee Happy allows her to be available to work directly with children who require extra support at times best suited to the child. Sarah works closely with key persons and the nursery’s management team to identify the exact needs of a child and implements a variety of Special Educational Needs Support Plans to provide relevant activities to enhance a child’s development.  Partnership working forms the foundation for any action plans and Sarah works side by side with our parents to ensure they remain fully informed throughout through general discussions together with specific progress meetings.

If required, Sarah is able to work with parents to make appropriate referrals for children to outside agencies such as Speech and Language Therapists.   This allows professionals to work together to create the best possible outcomes for children.  Currently, Little Treasures works with Health Visitors, Portage, Educational Psychologists and Speech and Language Therapists. Where specific needs are identified, Sarah acts as a port of call for our parents.

Effective transitions for children are important to us at Bee Happy.  We aim to ensure transition meetings with new settings take place.  This allows a child’s new teacher or key person to visit them here at Bee Happy to discuss a child’s progress and talk about what aims and targets are in place. This ensures that all relevant information is shared in order to create a smooth and effective transition for a child to a new setting.

Overall, the team at Bee Happy provide a stimulating and enjoyable environment to support all children through the early stages of their development, whilst also ensuring partnerships with our parents are strong to aid this process.
