- Description
A child initially coming into the setting with identified SEN needs would be supported by the key worker and manager or SENCO, meeting with the parents to go through any special requirements or needs for the child. We would discuss their likes and dislikes and any other information we may need to know in order for us to make any changes to the environment or provide any additional equipment.
The Transition from nursery to school is supported through statements written by the nursery. We also contact the school and request they come to visit the child here in a setting they are comfortable in to handover. The files containing IEP's tracking and observations on the children will all go with them to school. This ensures the teachers are aware of each child’s capabilities and levels of development.
Needs are identified through observations by key workers, room leads and the SENCO. We assess the needs by discussing any concerns or development progress with parents and putting IEP’s in place. These IEP’S are regularly assessed by the key worker or SENCO and progress or changes are monitored. If there are still concerns after IEP’s have been put in place and development is still not where it should be, the appropriate external agency is contacted.
Reasonable adjustments that could be made to the nursery would be hand rails and ramps to support physical disabilities although due to the age of the property we could not give access to those who could not get up the stairs. We could also make minor adjustments to decor to support anybody with visual impairments that may need to use touch and feel to move about the property. Changes could be made to the furnishings to support those that may be affected by noises and sound, such as softer furnishings that may quieten the noise.
We consult with parents usually via meeting with the management team or phone calls and emails if a meeting is not possible. The nursery gives daily spoken handovers to parents and any updates or concerns can be spoken about at this time.
Our staff are trained to support those with SEND though training courses. The SENCO has been on SENCO courses through Stockport council. Information from these has been passed to the staff through training evenings and meetings, both written and spoken. Some staff has attended makaton courses in order for them to be able to communicate to those who use makaton as primary communication.
We have worked with a range of services and have a close working relationship with Portage. We have also worked alongside speech and language and occupational therapists since opening and use their specialist knowledge and training when required.
We try to work alongside and involve parents as much as possible; we use a paperless observation & assessment system which the parents are actively involved in each month. This enables the parents to see the child’s next steps and work towards them at home as well. It also shows them what specific activities have been planned for their child throughout the month. We work along portage and the other agencies to create individual education plans which we then share with the parents to enable them to work on the same targets at home.
