Description

Brown Bear Childcare Nursery and Preschool recognises that some children have additional needs that may require particular help, intervention and support. These may be short-lived for a particular time in a child’s life or may require longer-term or life long support. At all times we will work alongside each child’s parents and any relevant professional to share information, identify needs and help the child and their family access the support they need.

We maintain a core team of staff who are experienced in the care of children with additional needs. The provision for children with learning difficulties and or disabilities is the responsibility of all staff at Brown Bear. The team is guided by our Senior Lead Practitioner and SENCo: Wendy Hartley. Staff undertake continuous professional development and training on up-to-date theoretical and emerging practice, to enable us to provide high quality support to children and their families.

We operate a flexible settling in procedure which is discussed with parents to meet the individual needs of the child. Our small homely settings ensure that all children get to know all staff, thus ensuring seamless transitions from one age to another within the setting.  Our physical environment is adapted, as far as possible, to meet the needs of individual children and adults. We provide resources, in so far as we can (human and financial), to implement our SEND policy.

We work closely with parents to create and maintain a positive partnership which supports their children. As such the setting provides daily opportunities for parents to discuss their child’s individual requirements, regular discussions opportunities for developmental up-dates and procedures to arrange bespoke meetings with parents and professionals.

Children’s views and interests are sought using a variety of methods, which enable key staff to provide stimulating activities which are differentiated to meet the individual needs and abilities of children. All children enjoy taking part in sign and sign activities, led by experienced staff.

The development and learning of all children attending Brown Bear Childcare is tracked and monitored and we work alongside parents to encourage their child’s continuous learning at home.

We use a graduated approach to identifying, assessing and responding to children who have emerging difficulties. Discussions are held with parents and support and interventions are agreed. We provide parents with information and resources, and signpost them to independent advice and guidance where necessary.

The staff have experience of working with many different professionals in a multi-agency approach, including colleagues from Education, Health, Portage, Social Care, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Educational Psychologist, Behavioural support, Hearing and Visual Impairment service.   When children are transferring from our setting, we liaise with colleagues from the receiving settings to exchange information to ensure a smooth transition and provide continuity of care for the child.

We work with colleagues from other settings and from the Local Authority to review our practice and update our service.  The effectiveness of children’s learning and development outcomes is analysed, evaluated and reviewed to ensure the settings continues to provide high quality provision for children and their families.
