ADAPT: After Diagnosis Autism Planning Meeting

ADAPT (After Diagnosis Autism Planning Team) are a team of Autism specialists that meet monthly to discuss children in Stockport who have recently received a diagnosis of Autism.   

ADAPT are a multi agency team with representatives from a range of specialist health and educational services including:

• CAMHS
• Psychology Service
• Speech and Language
• Behaviour Support Service
• Stockport InclusionTeam
• Autism Team

After the monthly ADAPT meeting, a member of the ADAPT team will be allocated to hold a planning meeting, in school, about the child or young person following their diagnosis.

What is the purpose of the planning meeting?   The purpose of the meeting is to bring home and school together to create a full and clear understanding of the child or young person’s needs.  The meeting is attended by Parents/Carers, School SENCo and a member of ADAPT.   The meeting looks at the way Autism Affects the young person’s daily life in situation such as:

• Social interaction
• Friendship
• Changes to routine
• Trying new situations
• In their homelife
• Sleep
• Diet

Planning Effective Strategies.  The meeting also looks at strengths and aims to build on these strengths.  Through discussion the planning meeting will identify the most effective strategies to support children and young people’s individual needs at school, at home and in their leisure time.  These might include:

• Rewards Systems
• Routine planning and visual timetables
• Quiet or safe spaces
• Reducing Demands
• Triggers
• Consistency 
• Boundaries
