SPACE: Stockport Parents of ADHD Children in Education
SPACE Stockport is a support group for parents and carers of children and young people in the Stockport area with ADHD and associated conditions.
SPACE aims to provide information, advice and support for parents and carers in a friendly open environment where they can express their feelings with other parents and carers.
What is ADHD? Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological condition. The term attention deficit can be misleading as it suggests that those with ADHD have a lack of attention, when the issue is usually that they have inconsistent levels of attention and difficulty controlling where it is directed. ADHD is commonly characterised by:
- Impulsivity: Speaks and acts without thinking. Interrupts. Calls out in class. Rushes through work. Acts the clown
- Hyperactivity: Restless. Fidgety. Taps, fiddles, touches. Always on the go. Takes risks
- Inattention: Difficulty sustaining attention / easily distracted. Doesn't appear to listen when spoken to. Difficulty following instructions and finishing tasks. Organisational difficulties. Regularly loses or forgets things.
Parent Support Meetings: SPACE ADHD group holds a regular meet up on the second Tuesday of the month (excluding August) Full details are available on the SPACE website.
