- Description
Elm Cottage allows for individuals to have their needs identified and planned for.
A broad breadth of information is gathered from the parents upon enrolment to gather background information of their child and to learn of other outside agencies working with the child and family.
Our setting is inclusive to all children and will plan for additional training of practitioners to support their child and their needs. Children and families are offered home visits upon starting at Elm Cottage.
When a child transfers to school, the child’s teacher will be invited in to attend a team around the child (TAC) meeting to discuss the needs and development of the child.
We have well trained staff who are consistent in their methods of assisting children with SEN and are confident in their planning as they are fully supported by the settings SENCO.
Parents are encouraged to keep the setting up to date with other outside agencies interventions and are invited into the setting to review the child’s progress.
IEP (individual learning plans) are devised to support each child with their next steps of development that is appropriate to their needs.
We are willing to make reasonable adjustments to meet individual needs by:
- Evaluating the access and space within the setting and adapting where necessary.
- Undertaking staff training so that they are knowledgeable and competent in supporting children’s individual SEN.
- Resourcing and seeking appropriate equipment and resources to accommodate the child’s needs and requirements.
Communication books are available to communicate daily between staff and parents.
Termly meetings are encouraged inviting the parents in to discuss their child’s development and plans for their next IEP (individual educational plan).
Staff are fully supported by the manager and SENCO of the setting, they are encouraged to participate in and attend training courses around SEND.
Our SENCO updates their knowledge regularly regarding SEND and feeds back information and current developments in legislations to the rest of the team.
Having 3 years of experience caring for a child with autism has enabled the staff team to be competent in caring for an autistic child. All staff feel knowledgeable and skilled in this area. We have a well trained and passionate SENCO who is supportive to all children and families with SEN.
We have experience of working with:
- Portage, occupational therapists, educational psychologists, speech and language therapists and behaviour support specialists.
- Staff have also had the opportunity to visit a local specialist unit with regards to supporting the child attending our setting with autism.
We give support to parents to aid their child’s development at home through:
- Discussing strategies either in TAC meetings or by sharing next steps from the individual educational plan.
- Ensure feedback from agencies that we are working is shared with parents.
- Discovering training and support groups for the parents to meet other parents with children with SEN.
