Local Offer

Description

Our Offer describes for parents what we at Fledglings Pre-school and Nursery do to support pupils with SEND.

For our purposes, the definition is outlined in the SEND Code of Practice.

A child has Special Educational Needs if he/she has a learning difficulty that calls for special educational provision to be made for him/her.

A child has a learning difficulty if he/she has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age, or has a disability which either prevents or hinders the child from making use of the educational facilities provided for children of the same age.

The Fledglings Offer

How do we know if a child needs extra support?

Our staff are very experienced in working with young children, using their expertise and observational skills to monitor and review your child’s progress, they develop an in depth knowledge of individual needs very quickly. When a child is aged between two and three we as Early Years Providers must review progress and provide parents with a short written summary of their child’s development. If a concern emerges, the staff will take advice from our SENCo. Mrs Julie Longbottom

What do I need to do if I think that my child needs additional support?

Come in and talk to us, we believe that our open communication with parents fosters high levels of trust and honesty, that enables us all to work together to support your child.

How will my child, who has identified additional needs, be supported?

Following careful observation and progress monitoring of your child, if there are significant emerging concerns or identified SEN or disability, we will develop a targeted plan to support your child involving other professionals. Depending on their need, we may provide additional 1:1 support following a successful application the council SEN Panel. However, many times having 1:1 support is not necessary, all nursery teaching staff will be aware of any areas of concern and will work collaboratively with outside agencies to implement any strategies that are required to support your child. We can access the services of many agencies, our main partners are: Portage, Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech and language (S&L), Sensory Support Service (SSS), and Educational Psychology (EP).

We have an experienced SENCo who works with and supports our staff. We also have training from the support agencies who work closely with our Nursery.

How will the Fledglings communicate with me about my child’s progress; emotional, behavioural, physical and educational?

We positively encourage open and honest dialogue between home and nursery, we believe that where there are high levels of trust and openness, then potentially sensitive topics of conversation can be had, ensuring that home and Fledglings are working together. There will be official review meetings, the usual parents’ meetings as well as numerous informal opportunities to provide updates on all areas of progress.

What will you do to support children with SEND and their parents at points of transition?

When your child starts at Fledglings you will have time to spend with your child’s key person to discuss and/or highlight any concerns you have about your child’s development. These concerns will be acted upon by your key-person supported by the nursery SENCo who will begin to observe and record your child’s development to inform your child’s individual targeted plan.

Room to room transition is handled by having a clear hand-over of information and visits to prepare your child for moving from room to room. We also work closely with our primary school partners, and have detailed meetings to share essential information, visits are arranged, with staff coming to Fledglings to observe your child, this ensures that the receiving school is fully aware of your child’s needs before starting. Parents are encouraged to visit the receiving school and /or encouraged to come into nursery and speak to the receiving school teachers when they undertake their transition visits.
