1st April 2021
I am delighted to let you know that Tim Bowman, Assistant Director for Education in Tameside is joining us in Stockport from tomorrow (1st April) as Joint Director for Education across Stockport and Tameside. As you will have heard through your teams and as part of this month’s ‘Let’s Talk’ session, this is part of our wider transformation programme of integration across Children’s Services through which we have been exploring opportunities for closer working and collaboration with colleagues in Tameside.
We have now formally agreed this ambitious and exciting arrangement. Tim will be responsible for all education and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) services across both local areas and will lead the programme of partnership working between the two councils. Over the course of April our current interim Director of Education Stephen Nyakatawa will be working closely to ensure a smooth handover.
The first stage of collaboration and shared leadership will focus primarily on education and SEND services, and consider the following areas:
- School Improvement
- SEND sufficiency and commissioning plan
Stockport Children’s Services will work closely with our own heads of service and school leaders over the coming months to explore how this arrangement can realise the priorities which are:
- Firstly, to secure better outcomes for children and young people through sharing and rolling out of best practice and innovation and co-creating solutions to system issues.
- Secondly, to identify potential economies of scale and savings.
It is anticipated that this partnership approach will bring further benefits and opportunities, and these will require exploration and evidencing through this initial phase of scoping and options appraisal.
Steve Nyakatawa himself is moving on to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to be their Divisional Director for Education starting in early May. Steve has been a key member of our leadership team throughout the pandemic and our recent transformation journey and we are grateful for all he has contributed. Steve has asked me to pass on that he has enjoyed working with all his colleagues across Stockport and wishes us all the best with our progress towards integration. I am sure you will join me in congratulating Steve on this appointment and wishing him well in this exciting new challenge.
Thanks to you all for your tremendous work and commitment and wishing dear colleagues some rest and relaxation over Easter .
