Supporting Children to develop their language skills

Poor language skills have a catastrophic impact on a child’s ability to access the curriculum. Even before the impact of the pandemic as many as up to half the children starting in reception had delays in their understanding, use of language and poor vocabulary. In order to address this language paucity, using a “narrative intervention” has proved extremely successful nationwide. The approach was originally developed in Stockport in collaboration with Black Sheep Press for children in KS1 and following that packs were developed for nursery and reception children.

This short workshop, presented by Judith Carey (speech and language therapist and author of the FS packs) aims to show the development of narrative skills in children, and provide a “taster” as to how the intervention works in practice in the foundation stage and KS1.
