Childcare providers caring for children under eight must register with Ofsted unless the law says they do not need to. Ofsted registers providers on the following two registers:
- The Early Years Register
- The Childcare Register
Some types of childcare are not required to register, but can choose to join the voluntary part of the register, these include:
- Care for children aged eight or over
- Creches operating for up to 4 hours
- Nannies or home-based care
- Activity based care such as sports or drama clubs
